The US open takes centre stage in the golfing world this weekend. As ever Bruce Robertson gives us his expert picks. This week hell be trying to outsmart David Jenkins whos also focusing on the the major this weekend.. Wholl be the top tipster? Heres Bruces tips
Venue: Congressional C C
Yards: 7,541
Par: 71
The US Open returns to Congressional for the first time since Ernie Els victory in 1997. It has, however, been host to The A T & T National in 2007 and 2009. This is normally the toughest of the four majors as they like to test every facet of the game to the limit.
The course is set up to play long, highlighted by the 523 yard finishing hole which is a par 4! The landing areas are narrow and the rough will be tough. Once that is negotiated, greens will be lighning quick at around 14 on the stimpmeter. Course management will therefore be crucial to leave the balll below the hole or on the correct side of the green.
No.1 Lee Westwood 12/1 (Totesport, Bet365, sky bet, Blue Sq)
They want the most complete golfer to win, and in my book thats Lee Westwood. A low key warm up last week at The St. Jude culminated in a good final round to finish 11th. Harrison Frazars victory proved that good things come to those that wait and Westy is long overdue a Major. He is long, straight and an excelent iron player with a good caddie to assist in the course management. If he handles the slick, tricky greens he can follow G-Mac as US Open champion.
No.2 Matt Kuchar 25/1 ! (Boylesports, Paddy Power, William Hill)
Matt looks the most likely US challenger given his highly consistent performance this year. Runner up for us two weeks ago at The Memorial, resulting in 8 top tens in his last 14 starts quite remarkable! His stats are excellent and he came sixth last year. He has the temperament to handle the big occasion. The cry may be koooch come Sunday evening.
No. 3 Martin Kaymer 33/1 (Stan James)
When I looked at the odds, I couldnt beleive my eyes when I saw Martin Kaymer at 33/1. His record in The Majors is impressive, including a USPGA victory. Patience will be a key element at Congessional and Kaymer has the patience, attitude and ability to add The US Open to his very impressive CV. I am not concerned about his recent average form.
No. 4 Camillo Villegas 100/1 (Betfred, Paddy Power, Coral)
The powerful Columbian completes the staking plan as he represents good each way value or a top rest of the world bet. His results have not always reflected his ability but he plays tough courses well and stormed up the leader board last week on a challenging track. He will relish the opportunity to bring this form into a major a! s he thr ives on pressure.
I wouldnt put anyone off Hunter Mahan and he is a real danger. BoVan Pelt can go well at big odds. Whatever happens, it promises to be a thrilling second major. Enjoy
