But it appears Paul is going to go out while he’s on top and is packing in the predicting game. After hearing of the news, thousands of Spanish fans have petitioned the zoo to put in a transfer request as he’s a national hero for picking the country to lift the World cup for the first time in its history. It’s not sure what offer what put on the table, but the zoo guaranteed, “Paul will receive the best attention, reflecting the great affection in which he is held by all the Spanish people since he predicted that the Spanish team would win the football World Cup,” Either the offer wasn’t high enough or the German aquarium owners are just playing hardball to drive the price of the mollusc up as the Oberhausen officials rejected the bid and flatly said that Paul isn’t for sale. The aquarium added, “We are not in contact with Madrid Zoo. And we know nothing about swapping Paul for another animal or him going to Madrid Zoo for a transfer sum.” The aquarium has already turned down a 38,000 euro offer from a Spanish businessman for the octopus and at the moment it looks as if Paul’s going to retire in Germany.
